Rust is a Must!

Of course it is... Rust is a must! A new collection of must-have rustic treasures and tees have hit the websites recently!

vintage style graphic tee shirt with rusty old truck
I love all things
  • tattered
  • shabby
  • cracked
  • chippy
  • old
  • worn
  • rusty
  • weathered
  • vintage
Yes, yes, yes! We do love all these things on the list above and decided to create a t shirt with this design! At first we had the white shirt below, but honestly I seldom wear white, so I added the graphic to the silver tee above. I figured I can't be the only one, so there's options now. I've also done it on a turquoise baseball tee, as someone's request and loved how it looked on it as well!

In case you missed our recent announcements, we have also added a NEW website: www.RustandRomance.com
Our etsy shop, gypsyfarmgirl.etsy.com is still up and running and the items have been listed on each site, so you can shop wherever you prefer. If you are on Facebook, you can shop directly from our page as well!

And because we can't let old barn tin go to waste, just because granddaddy's old hay barn came down in jagged and torn pieces, we made tin birds with keys for wings and bottle cap eyes. This is the first time the tin birds have been listed online. I've made the birds on yard stakes before, but the shipping cost was outrageous for a big box, so we just sold those in person at our events. The last time we made birds, we decided some would be on wire hangers, so they can easily be shipped and you can hang them anywhere you want to! With two sizes, I'm calling them the "mama birds" and "baby birds!"

I had random shapes left after cutting the birds out and decided to make butterflies, using keys for antenna and a spindle for the body. These have had some identity crisis as they've been called butterflies, dragonflies, and even bumble bees... I'll let you decide what they are!

Now even though we love rust, sometimes we need a little sparkle! These new stainless steel water bottles have the glitter effect with vintage style graphics. We never leave home, without taking water or tea with us. With it being summer time, I often need more than one cup, so these water bottles are great to take a refill. When we were at our show last week, I filled my big tumbler with ice tea and took two bottles of water in my bag. I love that they are stainless steel and reusable. There is a very limited quantity of these, so grab them now!

Junk and Love - Rust and Romance

Junk and Love - Rust and Romance
That pretty much describes our style. We love junkin' and repurposing things, but we also really love getting to help create wedding bouquets and florals for everyone who is celebrating life's special moments together.
GypsyFarmGirl
This shirt design had been one of the top sellers recently. It's got lots of things we love all rolled into one graphic tee - turquoise and rusty old truck, galvanized buckets and crates of flowers, burlap, lace, chippy wood and lights.
We were out junkin' one day and doing some picking in a old barn. We got excited when we found an old wheel. The lady said she would "love to see inside our head" so she could understand what we saw and why we got so excited about the random things we found. Well, I was seeing a funky junk wheel wreath! It sold quickly and everyone loved it. Jeff produced a couple more wheels from his junk stash out back and we made a couple more! This wheel came from a golf club caddy - how and where those came from, I really can't tell you, because we don't golf!

This was a burnt orange burlap toss bouquet that I made for a recent order.

 Boots and Burlap Boutonnieres!
These colors! The antique gold rodeo tee and sunflower bridal bouquet make me ready for summer time!
For the love of all things vintage, chippy, rusty, romantic, and shabby! This is our booth at the Mineola Antique Fair  last week (we share the booth with Angea at Rooster Tails.) It's ever changing, but always has a rustic flare!

This new tee pretty much sums it all up:
I love all things:
  • tattered
  • shabby
  • cracked
  • old
  • chippy
  • worn
  • rusty
  • weathered
  • vintage

We've added so many more shopping options this month, hopefully making it easier for you!

  • Our etsy shop is still open and that's where you can always find the custom / made to order wedding items and almost everything else. www.gypsyfarmgirl.etsy.com
  • We've added a new website www.RustandRomance.com whic included the ability to:
  • Shop directly on our Facebook page. Got to facebook.com/thegypsyfarmgirl and you should be able to scroll down and see some of the items. Click to expand or go to the "Shop" tab.
  • Some items can also be found on ebay, if that's your preferred avenue (mostly tee shirts, boots, and ready made wedding items.)
  • Shop in person at the Mineola Antique Fair held the second weekend of the month in Mineola, Texas. The June show will mark our one year anniversary with the fair!
Remember, if you don't see your size in stock on a t shirt, send me a message and I'll be happy to make one for you! I didn't have enough of the new "Love all things" tee for this weekends show, so I have been making more and shipping them out this week. We are a small business and don't keep a huge inventory in stock, although we can get more blank shirts in stock pretty fast.

Same goes for wedding bouquets - always happy to create custom bouquets in your colors. Please reach out and we can discuss your ideas and needs.

Use the Pretty Dishes!

Pretty pink floral print dishes make my heart go pitter-patter! My sweet mother-in-law has some of the prettiest mismatched serving dishes and I just love them! When I comment on one, she is always telling me that she found it at a garage sale or thrift store, usually for less than a dollar. They aren't in perfect condition, but we use them on a regular basis at her house, and they make my heart happy.

A few weeks ago, I was at the thrift store and passed up 5 dinner plates for $3.00, that were so pretty, but I said "I don't have room for more dishes..."

Early last week, Jeff's mom mentioned having a Valentine Party. I decided to make a strawberry trifle and she pulled out a pretty trifle bowl for me to use. She had got it (for free, but that's another story) at an estate sale in the community a few years ago. She recalled Mrs. Meadows bringing her desserts to the community and church functions in this same dish and she was so glad I made our dessert in her pretty bowl. I had taken my ingredients to their house the night before and had a basic glass trifle bowl, but it wasn't anything special and I certainly didn't mind using her pretty bowl instead.

For our party, we used the pretty napkins, a vintage tablecloth, and had flowers on the table. I made paper conversation hearts and hung them from the mantle and chandelier. We enjoyed the time with the ones we love. Our party wasn't really "pinterest worthy," but it was real life and a good time was had by all!

A few days before our get together, she commented that she didn't know if it would work and didn't know if everybody would get to come. I told her it didn't matter of there was 4 of us or all 10, we would still do it and it would be fun. (We had 9 for our Valentine Party!)

We eat supper with Jeff's family regularly - on another night, she got out the pretty blue bowls for us to eat spaghetti. It was just three of us eating in the pretty dishes, but it made the food taste just a little better; a little fancier than the everyday dishes.
use the pretty dishes, that tell a story, and make you happy
It got me to thinking - why aren't we using all the pretty dishes more? It's been reported that the millennial's and younger generations do not want their Mother or Grandma's dishes or other items we think of as heirlooms that will be passed down. Thrift stores are reporting being overrun with household items as the older generations are downsizing or estates are finalized and that these items are hard to get rid of. What we once thought was expensive china or dishes that we say are being saved for "special occasions" aren't really that valuable after all. So why are we hoarding these things away in the cabinet, collecting dust? Why not enjoy them, while we have a chance?

This is my Grandomther's china - I confess that I had to dust them, just to take this picture and I think I've used them once in 17 years. They've only come out of the china cabinet when I've painted it and maybe one holiday. We should really change that...

We visited with a sweet customer at the last Mineola Antique Fair. She told about her grandmother who loved scented powders. She took her a bottle on each visit, but her grandmother didn't seem to wear it often. When the granddaughter ask her why she wasn't using it, she said she was saving it for "special occasions." When she died, her cabinets were full of the powder and only two bottles were open. She ran out of special occasions, long before she ran out of powder.

I've been thinking about that conversation and recent experiences -  You know, I do have room for pretty dishes, it's just occupied with dishes / things that don't excite us. The peach pattern dishes we have are ok, but not vintage-y and fabulous. Simply put, they are practical, but nothing special. You know what I'm going to do? As I'm shopping spring garage sales and at the thrift store, I'm going to gather up my own collection of pretty mismatched dishes that make my heart happy. When I get that set, I'm going to load of those peach dishes up and donate them! I'm sure someone out there loves peach lattice dishes, it's just not us.

Along the same lines, I've purchased or made some new clothing items for myself recently. Are they always practical for what I'm doing? Not always.
I felt kind of like a fancy farm girl with my (faux) pearls, rust and romance tee and flannel while feeding cows this week, but it was fun and this new sweet suga-love took a felfie (farmer-selfie) with me.

This world needs more happy - let's live an inspiring life and enjoy the things we have, instead of muddling through waiting for the special occasion.

Let's use the pretty dishes, wear the scented powder, wear the things that make you feel pretty, let's fix the dessert and use the dishes that have a story to tell and evoke memories. While we ate that strawberry dessert, our family recalled memories of the Meadows family. While I didn't know them personally,  I do remember my side of the family baling hay on the property when I was a kid.

Spend the time with the people you love, tell the stories, enjoy the things you have now, for we aren't promised tomorrow.

Do more of what makes you happy

Now excuse me, I'm off to hunt for some pretty dishes!

*Please eat dessert responsibly ;) Everything in moderation and according to your health requirements or you might run out of special events, quicker than you want to.

Vintage Style Gift Tags and Bookmarks

I'm the one who loves to wrap gifts in boxes, with pretty bows and unique tags. I like my gifts to have a pretty tag or ornament included, so the recipient has a keepsake.

Recently, I created tags, that can be used as bookmarks or planner page markers afterwards. I used girls from the front of vintage patterns and added motivational quotes or words to them, and most have a piece of vintage lace that can be used to tie them on a gift. I love them and was excited how they turned out. A few are attached to a magnetic page holder. I use one in my planner, to mark the month.

I love to reuse items and used the paper instructions from the pattern to wrap the small box. (Side note - I buy old patterns to use the tissue paper to wrap my items that I ship out. You'd be surprised how many old patterns have never been cut and you can often find much larger pieces of tissue, compared to the smaller pieces now found in stores.)

I tied a bow with vintage lace and added the stories tag. Can you imagine the stories these two could tell???

The Glamour girl - she's also a magnetic bookmark.

I grew up reading, and loving Laura Ingalls Wilder and when I saw this quote in a magazine, I had to cut it out and use it!

"It is still best to be honest and truthful;
to make the most of what we have;
to be happy with simple pleasures;
and to have courage when things go wrong."
Bookmark gift tag with vintage pattern girl and Laura Ingalls Wilder quote
Now that I think about it, wouldn't this be the perfect gift tag on a box of Little House on the Prairie books and then it would be a book mark as someone read the set of books?!? All the tags are laminated, so they will hold up to use. You can take a Sharpie or permanent marker and right the "to: and from:" details on the back of the tag.

All the tags are now available in my shop and ready to be shipped now.

It's Time for the Mineola Antique Fair!

It's almost time for the Mineola Antique Fair July Show, so I thought we should share some of the things that Angea from Rooster Tails and I will have available. You can find us at the fair Friday and Saturday - July 13-14 from 9:00-5:00 at 115 Lankford St. in downtown Mineola, Texas. (Located right behind the Sonic off Hwy 80 or just a couple blocks from the train depot on Hwy 69.)

Before we opened last month, I was trying to figure out how we could make signs with our business names on them and some way to hang things from the building rafters. Jeff used his ingenuity and created hangers that hook over the rafters easily and we can hang things from them! Love that creative man of mine! Still we needed signs that could be seen across the building...I've had the large heart with wings hanging in my yard for a while, and decided to paint GypsyFarmGirl on it. Then I decided that I would make Angea a Rooster Tails sign. I free-handed this chicken weather vane and cut it out of tin (very similar to the image she has on her business cards.) I love how it turned out, other than when the light hits it a certain way, you can't see all the letters.

Angea's got a vintage bicycle and I found this cute tricycle recently. Aren't they a cute pair?
We went on a fabulous junk pickin' trip a few weeks ago and we love this chippy metal cabinet. It's one of those things I hate to give up, but I don't really have a place for it at home.

The chippy cabinet is setting on top of a vintage metal bar cart. Enamel pans, a kettle, vintage tin ceiling tiles... we loved that load of junk we found!
Speaking of finding things - I was cleaning a closet a few weeks ago and what I thought was a tub of lace was actually a bunch of vintage quilts! I guess it pays to clean after all ;)
Pretty in Pink - Some of our vintage farmhouse finds.
You might have noticed we have lots of glass jars. Let me add that they are very reasonably priced and would be perfect for storing items in your home, gifts, messages in a bottle, herb tonics / tinctures, etc. A couple remind me of the jars my Grandmama always put the peanut brittle and peppermint patties in at Christmas time! If you saw the square jar with a lid on the counter, you knew she had been making treats!
While we love summer, we are starting to dream about fall pumpkins and scarecrows.

Need vintage door knobs? We've got some!

We've still got to take another load of items to add back to our booth before we open up on Friday. The following pictures were taken at the last show. I bring home the clothes, tin signs, tumbler wraps and other items that are in my etsy shop and take back each time. (It's about 30 miles from my house and the building is only open occasionally, so I can't leave all my online inventory over there.)

Most of these clothing items pictured below is listed in my etsy shop, so I can ship them and the tin signs almost anywhere, if you're unable to make it to the show in Mineola. For all of you who can't make it, there is FREE Shipping on Clothing right now! If there's something else you see in our pictures that you are interested in and can't find it in my online store - please send us a message (email/facebook/etsy/instagram) and if it's able to be shipped, we will be happy to send it to you!

In fact, if time permits, Angea and I might even go Live on Facebook to have a preview and sale from the fair, giving everyone an opportunity to shop, no matter where you are located!

Vintage Queen!

Welcome Y'all mason jar tin signs. Display on your door, add to a wreath, on a wall, on the porch, etc.
Denim and lace vest / kimono - the lace is from a vintage wedding dress!
Hay Y'all!

In Rust We Trust - Live Love Junk

Reminder - the sale is the Second Friday and Saturday of the month. Although, if your passing through at other times of the month and see the doors open, you'll find some vendors working and you can do some shopping. Some of our stuff is there all month, while I do bring home some of it, including anything that's in my online shop. Make sense? I hear there's a food truck that's suppose to be there, someone with fried pies, and several new vendors will make their debut this month.

The Mineola Rodeo is also happening this week or you can stop by the nearby Mineola Nature Preserve (click here to see my blog post about our recent visit to the preserve.) There's lots of other fun shops to visit in Mineola or the Lake Country Playhouse and Historic Select Theater is a good place to take in a movie (and the vintage style billboard sign out there is photo worthy and one that I need to photograph.)

Hope you can come out and see us! Please introduce yourself if you are a follower, because I would love to meet you in person and thank you for being a part of this journey!
