Gone Junkin - Wooden Nickles, Chandeliers, and Snakes!

All in a days work - finally getting around to sharing our Thursday Junkin' adventures and let me tell ya, this is one we won't soon forget! Angea and I started met up at an estate sale Thursday morning. We found some vintage lace and a few items there. There was this bucket of wooden nickles that was used as advertising for the company the family owned. It led me to telling the story of what my Granddaddy always told me. When parting ways, many people say things like "after while crocodile" or "see you later, alligator." Not in my family! Granddaddy always told me "Don't take no wooden nickles...Don't kill any dead snakes."

Well, I did take a few of the free wooden nickles...

While we at the estate sale, Angea talked to a friend and she alerted us to an unadvertised garage sale, so we decided to go check it out and found some gorgeous blush lace panels there, although its what we saw between the two sales, that we won't forget!

We see this huge chandelier in a dumpster and of course we decided to stop and grab it up! I start to grab the chandy and Angea hollers "there's a dead snake!" I had to get photo proof and snapped a couple pictures before we loaded the chandelier up. Thank goodness it was a dead snake and we followed Granddaddy's advise and did not kill a dead snake!
It has a couple of bent arms, but just look how big it is! I can see visions of it hanging from an old oak tree with flowers, battery operated candles, and fabric intertwined in it for an outdoor wedding.
We then ventured on to another estate sale on our way to add some new items in our booth at Uniques and Antiques in Mineola, Texas. We had lunch, restocked our booth, then met up with another vendor friend.
Angea's fabric pumpkin patch keeps growing and she adds new styles each week!

That's a square crochet table cloth on the hutch. Prices have been marked down on some items in our booth, so be sure to check back on some of the items.

I love that denim and lace jacket that Angea repurposed! Embroidery is suppose to be a hot item for fall and this shirt has vintage embroidery and lace adorning it. There's several different styles of shirts and jackets to choose from.

Our farmhouse mantle... Can we just say those white pumpkins are  fantastic!

I've been working on some new tin signs and created some rustic pumpkins. (A larger selection of pumpkin and Mason jar signs are available in my online shop and available to ship worldwide.)
After getting back to Angea's house, I then decided I should run to Longview and get supplies for some weddings and events happening next week. I needed to secure the items, so me and my chandelier took off to Hobby Lobby.

Then it was time to go feed the horses and donkey. This is the boss horse, who has never let another animal eat with him or even come near him while eating. Somehow, someway he lets Ronnie D, the donkey, eat with him. Ronnie came to live on the farm last summer and was considered a "wild sh!t" by his previous owners, although now he loves attention and being petted. They have separate troughs, but end up eating together. I shake my head every time I see it, because I just can't believe my old horse will let someone eat with him!
The heifers were checking out what all was in my truck, while I was checking on them... or maybe they said it needed cleaning! If you missed the "What's in a Junker's Truck" post, you can check it out here.

Ah, finally home after about 10 hours on the go and unloading my junkin' finds!

I bought a petticoat at one estate sale! My mannequin needs a skirt for her next modeling gig! I got a ladder, a large frame, several vintage lace pieces, doilies, and some brooches.
I mean how could we pass this baby up?
Pretty doilies and an enamel bowl...

Talk about pretty blush lace!

It was a fun day with some neat finds. I went back to one estate sale today (Saturday) and found a few more goodies! I found a tv tray and orange mason jar pitcher top that is just like the one Grandmama had. We would carry dinner to Granddaddy in the hayfield on that tray and eat on the back of a truck or trailer bed. She would also make him lemonade in a mason jar and the orange handle / lid would allow you to pour out of the jar. (I'm sure it has an appropriate name, but I don't know it.) Those are a few finds that I intend to keep for myself...

Have you found anything good while out junking recently or have a crazy tale to tell?

Just remember - Don't take any wooden nickles or kill any dead snakes, but do take the gorgeous chandy in the dumpster!

What's in a Junker's Truck?

What's in a Junker's Truck? I saw this question recently and thought I would share what is in my truck.

A vehicles purpose is to get you from Point A to Point B. My truck serves as a farm truck, flower delivery truck, making supply and post office runs, and of course junkin', so it has many jobs. Every mile it makes is for a specific purpose and it has 202,000+ miles on it and still going strong.

Gypsy Farm Girl - gone junkin'

First off - ALWAYS my Yeti style tumbler with unsweet tea or water! I don't leave home without something to drink and many times my path does not take me near a store and it's cheaper to take my homemade tea anyways. I love how my cup keeps my drink cold all day in the Texas heat - it really is amazing to leave a drink in the closed up truck and come back to ice tea!

A recent pic of my floor board - sunglasses, staple gun, pliers, a comb, note pad for taking orders on the road, and craisens. I always pick up the little random feathers I find as well.

  • ratchet straps
  • bungee cords
  • old sheet or blanket
  • tarp
You never know when you are going to slip up on furniture or other things that need tying down and protecting or you have a load of feed and it starts raining. When I pull out the ratchet strap at a sale, I always get "you've done this before."

The back seat of my truck has been folded down for several years, to carry more stuff. Angea and I were loaded down, headed to our booth recently. A piece of plastic covers my back seat, because I could easily carry flowers, plants, junk, or any number of things and I attempt to protect the seat.

I have a bucket with bungees, floral wire, old towels, and a flash light. Said bucket can also be used, if I need to pick up flowers and keep them in water till I get home, or emptied and carry small items that you need to pick up from somewhere. When we are headed to our booth, there's also a bag with nails, screws, tacks, and extra tags and cards and a step stool.

On this particular occasion, I was delivering a casket spray and then headed to the farm to haul some calves, so my truck has many jobs.

My truck is usually dirty due to driving in the pasture... the calves were trying to help wash it one afternoon this week!
Feed and furniture!  After we got a truck with a bed cover, I found several pieces of furniture that wouldn't allow the cover to close all the way. It didn't take long to figure out that a bungee or hay string would loop through that black handle and hook to the bumper and keep it closed. Where there's a will, there's a way!

Occasionally this sweet girl insist upon going and you'll notice the leashes on the dash in one picture.

A few other things you will find in my truck:

  • jumper cables (Daddy gave me a pair when I turned 16 and said you'll never know when/if you need them, but be prepared.)
  • gloves
  • wet wipes
  • hand cleaner
  • tape measure
  • duct tape
  • a bag with an extra change of clothes and shoes
  • mud boots
  • wire
  • wire cutters
  • screw driver
  • hammer
  • scissors
  • knife
  • tire tool
  • hoe
  • shovel
  • cell phone charger
  • napkins / paper towels
  • spoon (occasionally you pick up some ice cream along the way and need a bite or 10 before you get home!)
  • card reader (if I need to meet customers and take mobile payments.)
  • baling wire (on a farm, almost anything can be fixed with baling wire or duct tape!)
  • a few other random farm tools

rustic camper and truck pillow

I think that's the gist of it! Anything that's in your vehicle that I should add to mine?

Thursday's are for Junkin'

Thursday's are our Gone Junkin' day, aka girls day, aka shopping trip, aka business meeting (lunch at LaFinca), aka board meeting (planning out our booth spaces, junk transformations, etc), aka vintage market day and lots of fun!

Angea and I meet at our favorite little vintage market. We shop there first - Angea being the early bird, she gets a newspaper and we plan our garage and estate sale route, then we end with lunch at our favorite Mexican food restaurant. Some days there are good finds, some days it's not so good. Today, was a good day - lots of boxes and sacks in my back seat! Most of the sales were in dark barns today, since it was so cloudy and dreary, but that didn't stop us.  Ok, I will admit one dark barn was kind of weird in a creepy way and we left quickly without buying anything. That's the good thing about shopping in pairs and we vowed to never go back to that location. We both found boxes of vintage lace today, which is always exciting!

I can't pass up pretty vintage lamps, candlesticks, doilies, or silver platters
Or a very vintage flour sifter and bundt pans, or macrame or a gorgeous blush pink lace dress (so much gorgeous trim on it that will look fabulous in wedding bouquets.)
My mind is busy plotting what I will do with everything! I've got a few ideas and some things will likely show up in our Uniques and Antiques booth (exciting news coming soon about it) in Mineola.

P.S. There's is a new batch of Gone Junkin' sleeveless shirts and distressed, bleached flannels available in my Etsy shop now!
